A number of linearly arranged line sensors includes a number of linearly arranged picture elements acting as photodetectors. The width of elements at the ends of each linear arrangement is smaller in the direction of the linear arrangement than the one of elements in the central portion. An amplifier having a gain of 2 makes the output signal of the smaller one to be equal in level to that of the centrally positioned photodetector. The output signals are converted into signals of a time-divided signal row by a shift gate. The photodetector elements are formed on a single semiconductor substrate together with the amplifier.
