Coaling apparatus for strip metal comprises a series of spaced cooling rolls which provide a serpentine path for the strip, a cooling roll, temperature sensors for detecting the temperature across the strip, and a strip temperature control and device. The gas jets are provided with gas flow control valves which are electrically connected to the control and arithmetic device. The temperature sensors are also connected to the control and arithmetic device. The metal strip is cooled by directing cooling gas onto the strip as it passes around a series of rollers, e.g. in a continuous annealing line or a galvanizing line.
