A chopped strand of carbon fibers with a bulk density of 0.2-0.8 g/cm3 is produced by spinning petroleum or coal based pitch and then bundling and cutting the resulting fibers into lengths of 1-50mm. The fibers are the subjected to infusibilization, carbonization and graphitization before applying an (in)organic binder so that 0.1-3.0% of binder solids adhered to the strands. The fibers have a high strength and can be used for the reinforcement of polymers and cement.
