The carriage incorporates an electromagnetic (4d) needle selector unit, having an attraction surface (30) which controls rockable selector jacks mounted on respective support jacks. The selector attraction face (30) has a correction edge (A) for the selector jacks, which is flanked by support edges (B) for the selector jacks, the edges all extending in the direction of the lengths of the selector jacks and the support edges (B) being oppositely upwardly inclined away from the correction edge (A). Permanent magnets (51,52) flank the electromagnets (4d) to hold selector jacks in rocked positions of selection.
