Bumper arrangement for motor vehicles

A bumper arrangement for motor vehicles is described, in the case of which the bumper can be extended in the case of danger. In this process the bumper initially adopts a prestressed rest position in which it is also able to absorb relatively small shocks, as may occur during parking, for example. If a collision at a relatively high speed seems to be imminent, the bumper is automatically completely extended in order to have at its disposal an absorption path which is sufficiently long for the collision. In its retracted, prestress position, the bumper is held by means of a retraction device (wire cable 3, toothed rod 4, geared motor 6). <IMAGE>
