Fabric-reinforced composite with resistance to ballistic impact - mfd. from prepregs contg. aliphatic polyamide and aromatic polyamide fabrics, heat-treated before impregnating with resin

A process is claimed for the prodn. of a fabric-reinforced composite article (I) with improved resistance to ballistic impact, in which a fabric based on aliphatic polyamide fibres (II) and a fabric based on aromatic polyamide fibres (III) are immersed in a soln. of heat-curable resin, dried, made into prepregs, cut to size, laid up to a predetermined thickness with prepregs (II) on the outside and prepregs (III) on the, heated and pressed together; the novelty is that fabric (II) is heat-treated and that fabrics (II) and (III) are then preheated before dipping in the resin soln. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are, e.g., helmets, tank protectors, bullet-proof vests, linings and containers, etc. The specified heat treatments result in improved tensile strength, ballistic impact resistance and prodn. efficiency (due to improved fabric-resin bonding and reduced shrinkage in the press) and longer service life (reduced tendency to flexural fatigue and delamination).
