Indirectly luminous display surface

A display surface is to be made in such a manner that it is clearly visible in the case of various possible applications without additionally illuminating a room which, for operational reasons, has to be blacked out (dimmed, darkened). Light-emitting diodes are fitted to the edges of a display surface, which consists of a transparent plastic with embedded fluorescent material, in such a manner that they can uniformly inject their light into the sections of the display surfaces. The wavelength of this light is matched to the wavelength of the fluorescent dyes embedded in the plastic. For contrast formation, partial surfaces are coated with a reflecting layer and/or provided with a contrasting print. In the case of the display surface according to the invention the entire arrangement is designed in such a manner that a clearly visible display is produced, it being possible to achieve good contrasting effects. The display surface is suited to use in darkened rooms since it emits an extremely small amount of light to the environment.
