Method and apparatus for quenching a metal melt

A strip (13) of melt is applied to a cooling film (14) in the form of a recirculating closed loop from a slit nozzle (12) of a crucible (10). The strip of melt is transferred to a cooling roller (16), a contact-pressure roller (15) being provided at the point of transfer. The strip of melt solidifies on the cooling roller (16) and is wound into a helical coil. The rapid solidification produces a pore-free metal structure which would not be possible in the case of slow solidification. <IMAGE>
