PURPOSE:To decrease the amount of mercury in neg. electrode zinc and enhance the battery performance by using neg. electrode zinc, which has a low amalgamation rate and is provided at the surface with mercury peroxide, to an alkaline battery. CONSTITUTION:Neg. electrode zinc 4 is normally mixed with a gelling agent such as carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC) and used. A mixing time of 30-40min turns the surface color of zinc powder from silver white into black grey, and mercury peroxide is produced on the surface. Thus this powder surface of Hg/Zn alloy is amalgamated, and to this surface mercury peroxide is attached to accomplish neg. electrode active substance. This decreases the amount of mercury in the negative electrode without deteriorating strong discharging performance.
