A chain tensioner has a spring element and a hydraulic chamber. According to the invention, the removal opening for the hydraulic medium has a significantly larger cross-section than the feed opening. While the tensioning force is primarily provided by the spring element, the hydraulic system acts primarily as a damper. A certain amount of ambient air gets into the hydraulic system via the removal opening, this effect being intentional.
