The system is designed to be mounted in a helmet. It makes use of an afocal assembly, with a first (4) and a second (5) parabolic mirror, disposed downstream of a collimating objective lens (2) which supplies a collimated radiation. The first mirror (4) is totally reflecting and the second mirror (5) semitransparent in order to transmit simultaneously, by reflection, the collimated radiation and, by transparency, for example the view of the external scene. These two mirrors are integrated at the ends of a plate (10) having two parallel faces (10AV, 10AR). The collimated radiation penetrates into the plate through one of the parallel faces (10AR), is reflected on the first mirror (4), undergoes a succession of total reflections on the parallel faces (10AV, 10AR) and then is reflected on the second mirror (5) before emerging from the plate (10), again through one of the two faces (10AR). The invention is applicable, in particular, to the construction of helmet displays for aircraft pilots. <IMAGE>
