摘要 PURPOSE:To vary the liquid crystal orientation control force of an orienting film greatly at the time of manufacturing and actually using the liquid crystal display element by including a process wherein the hydrophibic property of the surface of the orienting film varies by light irradiation. CONSTITUTION:While light irradiates from a mercury lamp nylon-made nonwoven fabric is rubbed against the surfaces of orienting films 3 and 4, and the light irradiation is then stopped temporarily; and the films are stuck together across bead spacers 6 and the periphery except where an injection hole is formed is sealed with sealing resin 5. Then while the light irradiates again, ferroelectric liquid crystal 7 is injected into the element under reduced pressure in a C-phase temperature range of specific temperature. This liquid crystal shifts in the order of an I phase, a Ch phase, an SmA phase, and a chiral SmC phase in a temperature lowering process. Then the element is cooled to room temperature, the light irradiation is stopped, and the injection hole is sealed to form the ferroelectric liquid crystal display element. Consequently, the film which is weak in orientation control force in the actual driving, but increased in the orientation control force is obtained.
