PURPOSE:To readily, industrially and advantageously obtain the subject compound useful as a catalyst for polymerizing polyurethanes in high yield by condensing a morpholine compound with diethylene glycol using a Raney cobalt catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A morpholine compound expressed by formula I (R1 and R2 are H or CH3) or formula II (R3 and R4 are R1 and R2) in a larger amount than the theoretical one and diethylene glycol are subjected to condensation reaction in the presence of a Raney cobalt catalyst at 100-270 deg.C under 5-150kg/cm<2> H2 pressure in an autoclave for some ten hr to tens of hr and the catalyst is then filtered off to carry out vacuum distillation of the reaction solution. Thereby, the high-purity objective compound expressed by formula III is obtained. The Raney cobalt catalyst is obtained by charging a Raney cobalt alloy consisting of 30-50% Co component and 70-50% Al component into an alkaline solution, eluting the Al component, activating the resultant substance and washing the activated substance and ordinary commercially available products can be used. The above-mentioned ternary alloy type catalyst prepared by adding a small amount of Mn, etc., as the third component in addition to the Co and Al can be also used. |
