PURPOSE: To obtain a stabilized sustained release emulsion, comprising a lipophilic external phase and a hydrophilic internal phase containing a pharmaceutically active ingredient and a gelling agent, substantially insoluble in the lipophilic external phase and incorporated thereinto and suitable for oral administration. CONSTITUTION: This stabilized sustained release emulsion comprises a lipophilic external phase and a hydrophilic internal phase, containing a pharmaceutically active ingredient substantially insoluble in the lipophilic external phase and a gelling agent (e.g. carboxymethyl cellulose) and incorporated thereinto. The external phase of the emulsion is composed of a nontoxic lipophilic medium, e.g. lard, peanut oil or sesame oil and the internal phase thereof is composed of a nontoxic hydrophilic medium, e.g. water, glycerol or propylene glycol. The emulsion contains the hydrophilic phase in an amount of about 20 to about 60wt.%, preferably about 25 to about 35wt.% based on the total weight of the emulsion and the lipophilic phase in an amount of about 40 to about 80wt.%, preferably about 65 to 75wt.% based on the total weight of the emulsion.
