The apparatus comprises two arrays of optical fibres disposed in horizontal and vertical planes relative to the axis of the burner. The optical fibres each has a light receiving end lying in a line and facing the flame. The fibre optic arrays are operative to generate a sheet of light corresponding to the selected direction. A monochromator receives the sheet of light, spreading it into its component wavelengths for application to two detector arrays of light sensing elements. The spaced apart arrays of light detectors are utilised to measure the light at two discrete wavelengths.
