PURPOSE:To obtain a preventive agent for dental caries, consisting of magnolol and/or honokiol, capable of exhibiting remarkable germicidal activity against cariogenic bacteria in a low concentration for a short time and administrable for a long period or in an excessive amount without anxiety due to hardly any side effects. CONSTITUTION:A preventive agent for dental caries, consisting of magnolol expressed by formula I and/or honokiol expressed by formula II which are constituent ingredients of an extract essence of Magnolia bark [including dried bark of Magnolia obovata Thunb. (Magnoliae Cortex), dried bark of Magnolia officinalis Rehder et Wilson, etc.] which is a Japanese and Chinese herbal remedy or a mixture thereof, extremely useful as an agent for the oral cavity capable of remarkably inhibiting growth of a bacterium Streptococcus mutans causing dental caries and inhibiting occurrence and progress of dental caries and usable without anxiety with hardly any considerable bad influences of administration for a long period or in an excessive amount due to slight abominable side effects. |
