The present invention relates to a machine for filling containers, such as bottles, by means of gravity. In a machine including several filling stations, each one of which combines a filling spout 9 and a means 7 for receiving a container under this filling spout, the filling spouts 9 are supplied by means of a buffer reserve 36, open to atmosphere 37, in which it is possible to establish the effective level of filling liquid at a reference level 43, 44, 48 selected 45, 46, 47 as a function of the joint speed of displacement of the various filling stations. A drop height for the filling liquid is thus determined, that is to say a flow rate in the various filling spouts 9, which makes it possible to fill the containers in a time which is as close as possible to the time they need in order to be displaced, jointly with the filling stations, between a zone of opening of the spouts and a zone of closing the latter, regardless of the speed of displacement between these two zones. <IMAGE>
