A vacuum circuit interrupter has a vacuum vessel (12). A pair of opposed electrodes which can be separated are provided, with one (7) stationary and the other (10) moveable. A tubular shield (13) in the vessel concentrically surround the electrode. The shield has a large diameter central portion and small diameter portions at opposite ends with tapered transition position between them. The axial length (L) of the large diameter portion is not less than (total electrode thickness + electrode gap length + 2 (phi2-phi1)/2 tan 45 deg) where phi2 is the inner diameter of the large portion of the shield and phil is the outer diameter of the electrrode. The taper angles of the transition portion are in range 80-100 deg.
