A character image data compression system for compressing system binary data of matrix type corresponding to a twodimensional character image comprises the steps of: detecting the occurence or non-occurence of a character image segment in each data element of the matrix at each line; identifying the contact mode as herein defined in the row direction of the character image data by comparison of data in adjacent lines; and producing an output comprising a control code corresponding to the contact mode, and variable length coded data corresponding to information of respectively different types in accordance with the type of contact mode.
