<p>Apparatus for controlling a heating or cooling system that includes an evaporator (10) and a thermostatic expansion valve (22) having a thermoplastic bulb (24). The control apparatus (34) comprises a thermoelectric heat pump device (30) responsive to an electrical control signal for controlling transfer of thermal energy to and from the bulb (24), at least temperature sensing device (36) associated with system, and an electronic control circuit (34). The control circuit (34) is responsive to the sensed temperature to provide the electrical control signal to the thermoelectric device (30) for maintaining a desired operating condition of the evaporator (10). The thermoelectric device (30) acts as heat pump for controlling flow of thermal energy to and from the bulb (24) with a relatively small amount of electrical energy input. Preferably, the thermoelectric device (30) is positioned between the bulb (24) and the suction line (12).</p> |
