The invention relates to a device for cutting an endless web having a feed device (2) for the web (1) and a cutting device (4, 5, 6) with at least one intermittently movable cutting element (6) by means of which the web (1), which can be moved past the cutting device in an intermittent manner, can be severed in each case along a predetermined severing line during a stationary period. In order to increase the cutting output, the invention provides for the cutting element (6) to be movable along a curved path with respect to the web (1) and for the drive (9) to be capable of being switched on, to permit movement of the cutting element while the web is still being advanced, at such a moment (tx) that, with a predetermined web deceleration and cutting element acceleration, the cutting element (6) comes into contact with the severing line between two web sections while the web is stationary, and that the difference in time between the moment (t2) at which the web (1) becomes stationary and that at which cutting (to) takes place is kept to a minimum and that the drive (8) be capable of being switched back on, to permit the web to be advanced, at the moment that cutting (to) takes place or immediately after it while the cutting element (6) is still being retarded.
