The invention relates to an apparatus for separating off and pressing out solids from waste waters (effluents) having a low solids content from 0.3%; for example for separating off and pressing out fibrous constituents from thin slurries (liquid manures) which arise in the removal of liquid manure from industrial animal production units. The aim is to achieve a high degree of separation in order to achieve in this way an improved availability of the solids as compostable, storable or land fillable material, in agriculture, for example, for special fertiliser purposes and the use of liquid phase in economical irrigation without the risk of causing blockage, or the formation of sediment and scum. The object is achieved according to the invention in that, by establishing a difference in height between the feed and screened liquid at a rotating screen drum having gap widths of 0.15 to 0.6 mm, a concentration to give a still free-flowing sludge is achieved such that in dewatering to give a crumbly product in a press component having gap or whole widths of 0.3 and 3 mm, the fines are incorporated in the solids carpet forming and can be discharged with the solids pressed out.
