NEW MATERIAL: An N-(mercaptoalkyl)-ωhydroxyalkylamide of formula I [(n) is 2, 3; (m) is 2-5] and the corresponding disulfide of formula II. EXAMPLE: 4-Hydroxy-N-2mercaptoethyl)butylamide. USE: An odorless cosmetic reducing agent having an excellent reducing characteristic matching to that of thioglycolic acid and used at the early stage of a permanent deformation operation for hair. PREPARATION: The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a mercaptoalkylamine of formula III with a lactone of formula IV in the presence or absence of a solvent preferably in the presence of an alcohol selected from methanol, ethanol, isopropanol and butanol at a temperature of 20-110 deg.C. The compound of formula II is obtained by reacting a compound of formula V with a compound of formula IV.
