In one embodiment, the electro-mechanical converter which may be regarded as a unipolar motor comprises a rotary rotor made from a conducting material, but one of low permeability, which has two integral discs which are spaced axially and which project radially. The first disc is larger than the second disc and there are two toroidal magnets arranged on each axial side of the first disc. The two magnets have mutually facing opposed poles. Both magnets establish a one-way circumferential magnetic field across the first disc over a radial mid-section thereof. Direct current is introduced via the edge of the disc, via a location which is fixed with respect to the rotary rotor, across a bath of mercury. Direct current is extracted from the structure of the rotor across the second disc and a second bath of mercury. <IMAGE>
