An exothermic cutting electrode (10) consists of either a number of wire rods, of helically wound wire, or of a single metal rod (14), all with a central aperturely which oxygen and the like may be passed. The electrode is coated with a mixture (18) containing an oxidizing material, an arc stabilizing material and a binder, or with a conventional welding flux. A number of parallel longitudinal portions of reduced thickness extend the length of the coating. These portions may be formed as grooves, or as flutes of regular polygonal cross-section. Alternatively the crosssection of the coating may be a regular polygon.
