PURPOSE:To avoid developing to an engine abnormality, when an abnormality in the valve timing control means for controlling valve timing in response to the operating conditions of an engine is detected, by providing a fail-safe means for stopping the operation of a knocking control means. CONSTITUTION:In a device in which a driving circuit 21 for controlling a fuel injection valve 6 and ignition plugs 22 provided on respective cylinders, and a solenoid valve 23 for carrying out the valve-timing changeover control of intake/exhaust valves are controlled by a ECU 5 respectively, a knocking sensor 24 is fitted in the circumferential wall of the cylinder block of an internal combustion engine 1 in the vicinity of the top dead center. Based on the valve timing determined by the ECU 5 in response to the operation conditions of the engine, and on the knocking condition of the engine detected by the knocking sensor 24, ignition timing is controlled so as to prevent the occurrence of knocking of the engine 1. And it is so contrived that when an abnormality in the valve timing is detected by the ECU 5, knocking control is stopped. |
