A heater for heating a tube fitted over an elongate member comprises a base (12) with a thermally conductive elongate support plate (12a) to carry the tube and having a central heating region, the tube ends being outwardly of the region ends, and a heating element (16) in contact with the outer surface of the region to heat the region and then outward ends of the plate so that the tube is shrunk from its central area outwardly. The element is pref. a positive temperature coefficient thermistor with resistance increasing with temperature and rising abruptly when it reaches a set level so that temperature rise is stopped.
