A variable power cooking apparatus comprises; means for heating food; setting means for establishing either a first output state or a second output state; signal output means for outputting first output pulses or second output pulses which first output pulses are generated when the first output state and second output state have been established; inverter means for controlling a heating output of the heating means in response to the first or second output pulses from the signal output means; first control means for causing the output of the inverter means to be varied by controlling a pulse duration of the first output pulses of the signal output means.
