PURPOSE:To obtain alumina fibers or membranes excellent in filament forma tion, homogeneity, stability and spinning properties by forming an aqueous viscous solution of an aluminum organic compound in a specific organic acid into fibers or membranes and sintering the formed product. CONSTITUTION:An organoaluminum compound soluble in an aqueous organic acid is dissolved in an aqueous solution of an organic acid bearing 2 or 3 carboxyl groups and 1 or 2 hydroxyl groups or bearing 2 carboxyl groups, concentrated with heat to give a viscous solution. Then, the viscous solution is extruded through nozzles or a slit to form filaments or a membrane and sintered to give the objective filaments or a membrane. The organoaluminum compound is, e.g., aluminum alkoxide or aluminum carboxylate. The organic acid bearing 2 or 3 carboxyls and 1 or 2 hydroxyls is, e.g., malic acid, tartaric acid or citric acid. The organic acid bearing 2 carboxyls is, e.g., oxalic acid or iminodiacetic acid. |
