The invention concerns a method for removal of sulfur from flue gases from a power plant operated with solid fuel. Typically ash containing unburned organic material remains from such fuels after combustion. According to the method during the combustion process a carbonate of an alkaline earth metal is supplied to the combustion unit to bind a significant part of the sulfur and the cooled flue gases are moistened with water to bind the sulfur oxides as completely as possible. According to the invention after the combustion process, ash is separated from the flue gases essentially containing unburnt carbon, the ash is fed to final burning to burn the carbon in the ash, the gas stream with the sulfur compounds is oxidized catalytically and the oxidized gas stream and finely burned ash are combined and treated with a suitable amount of water to convert the sulfur compounds into gas with lime in the ash. <IMAGE>
