PURPOSE: To sufficiently mix reaction gases and a quench gas by dividing catalytic mass into several beds in series, holding the first plural beds in tact in the axial direction and setting the last bed in the radial direction and forming a space between the bottom of the upper bed and the free surface of the lower bed. CONSTITUTION: The system consists of a shell M, granular catalysts C1... formed in a layer and apparatus R1... for supplying the quench gas to the inner side of the catalyst layers. The catalytic mass is divided into several pieces of the beds in series.
