PURPOSE:To efficiently obtain the good initial orientation of a liquid crystal without executing rubbing by laminating >=1 layers of monomolecular layers by using a compd. which has a core having rigidity at the center of the molecule and has the property to form the monomolecular film by developing on a water surface on a substrate, thereby forming an orientation control film. CONSTITUTION:The compd. which has the core having rigidity at the center of the molecule and has the ability to form the monomolecular film is dissolved in an org. solvent and the soln. is dropped on the water surface so as to be developed on the water surface. The developed film is then compressed until a specified surface pressure is attained to a solid film state. The glass substrate 11 previously formed thereon with transparent electrodes 12 consisting of an indium-tin oxide of specified patterns is moved upward and downward to transfer the solid film onto the substrate 11. The number of the times when the substrate crosses the water surface is changed to accumulate the desired number of the layers by which the orientation control film 14 is formed. The high-grade liquid crystal element which is uniformly oriented without having unequalness is easily obtd. in this way at a low cost without subjecting the element to a post treatment such as rubbing. |
