A highly stable high intensity atomic emission light source (8) has a discharge region (12) and the sample region (14) each controlled by a separate heater (22, 24). The sample region heater (24) is controlled by a lamp stabilizer circuit which maintains the breakdown voltage within the discharge region at a constant level, thus providing a stable and high intensity light source.
