PURPOSE:To obtain the subject substance in high yield by subjecting m-xylene, propylene and CO to acylating reaction in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst, hydrogenating CO group of the resultant 2,4-dimethylisobutyrophenone, dehydrogenating and cyclizing the hydrogenation products. CONSTITUTION:m-Xylene, propylene and CO are subjected to acylating reaction in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst, such as AlCl3, to selectively provide 2,4-isobutyrophenone in high yield with hardly any formation of isomers. The CO group in the resultant compound is then hydrogenated to afford three kinds of hydrogenation products. Respective compounds or a mixture thereof is then subjected to dehydrogenating and cyclizing reaction to provide the subject substance. Conversion into 1-(2,4-dimethylphenyl)-2-methyl-propene among the three kinds of hydrogenation products is preferred, since the objective substance is obtained in the best yield with a small hydrogen consumption. The subject substance provides a raw material for dicarboxylic acids used in producing polyethylene naphthalate. |
