The invention relates to a method and an appliance for printing characters onto a support, particularly onto a number plate. The method consists in placing, on a work surface 24, a coloured strip 48, preferably coloured black, and of the same dimensions as the plate, and then placing, over the said adhesive strip, a transfer sheet 50 one of the faces of which is coated with an ink which contrasts with the colour of the strip, for example white, the inked face being applied onto the adhesive strip, and imprinting the chosen character by local transfer of ink from the transfer sheet onto the coloured strip by means of a punch 40 whose shape corresponds to the character. <IMAGE>
