A chassis (14) carries the hoist mechanism comprising a motor, a drop brake, requisite transmission and coupling units, and line drums (32,33) driven by the motor. All these items, together with light fittings, are mounted to form a composite unit which is suspended on at least two lines (12,13) fitted around the drums. The upper ends of the lines are fixed to the ceiling so that the hoist is lowerable by paying out the lines from the drums. - An electrical supply cable (35) runs between an upper connecting point (34) and the hoist motor and light fittings. It is guided by the two hoist lines via stirrups. The chassis has an upper stationary part, and a lower movable part. These parts shut tightly against each other to enclose the motor, transmission and coupling units, line drums, and the electrical supply cable when the hoist is in its upper position.
