In a sensor (10) for automatically triggering vehicle occupant protection devices, a ball (15) which serves as an inertia element is mounted in a dish-shaped element (13) with obliquely rising side walls (14). The ball (15) is operatively connected to a coil (16) which has an alternating current flowing through it and is part of an oscillatory circuit. If the coil (16) is deflected out of its initial position, the impedance of the coil is changed so that a trigger stage (19) can be switched and the vehicle occupant protection devices can be triggered. The electric components of the sensor (10) can be particularly advantageously manufactured and installed using thick film technology.
