A coding switch for forming an n-bit code word has a movable switching element 4 which carries code elements Z1-Z8, Z'1, Z'2 disposed at equal steps in one track which extends parallel to the direction of movement of the switching element 4. A series of interrogation stations A, B, C is arranged in a row parallel to the track at the same spacing as the code elements. The interrogation stations A, B, C are formed by a contact plate 7 and contact springs 8. In alternative embodiments the switching element is a rotatable disc. <IMAGE>
