In a method for stacking or palletising flat elements (66), such as cardboard blanks, prefolded flat-lying folding boxes and the like, the flat elements (66) are moved individually or in small packets onto a deposition surface (7), from which they are transferred to a pallet (65) or a part-stack situated on the pallet (65). In order to be able to continue with the stacking operation without interruption while the filled pallet (65) is exchanged for an empty one, an intermediate deposition surface (40) is provided onto which the flat elements (66) are transferred either when no loadable pallet (65) is available or when the part-stack on the pallet (65) has a smaller than defined height.
