The caravan or mobile home is entered by means of a step which can be retracted when not in use. The step is formed by a platform (14) which has each end of its inner edge pivoted to one end of a link (12). The other end of each link (12) is pivoted to side plates (10) attached to the caravan structure. The outer end of the platform (14) has notches (26) on each side which engage pins (20) which project from the side plates (10) and hold the platform in its retracted position. The platform is swung downwards and outwards to its extended position and two other notches (24) near the inner edge of the platform, engage the pins (20) to hold the platform in its extended position.
