The arrangement consists of a source (1) of visbile, visible, i.r. or u.v. light, a lens (2) for producing a microscopic light spot on the specimen, a light intensity controller (4), a scanner (5a,5b), a detector of the mechanical vibrations of the specimen caused by the varying illumination, an electronic amplifier, a signal processor and an image reproduction device. The detector of the mechanical vibrations is a piezo-electric flexural transducer (8) placed in acoustic contact with the specimen. The specimen and the flexural transducer are mounted together on a rapidly moving specimen table (9) in a sound insulating chamber (10). ADVANTAGE - Range of applications of laser scanning microscopes is expanded by developing arrangement for rapid, non-destructive imaging of structures inside material using the photo-acoustic effect.
