The invention relates to the D-HicDH gene, DNA part-sequences of the D-HicDH gene (in particular for use as translation initiator and/or as transcription terminator for the preparation of gene products), expression vectors containing the D-HicDH gene or the DNA part-sequences, E. coli strains for the preparation of D-HicDH, the enzyme D-HicDH and processes using it for converting hydroxy acids into keto acids and vice versa.
