PURPOSE:To continuously, efficiently, and economically electrolyze water without discharging a catholyte by electrolyzing water in the electrolytic cell having a diaphragm to generate oxygen or ozone and hydrogen, and returning the water to an anode chamber from a cathode chamber. CONSTITUTION:The electrolytic cell 4 is separated by an ion-exchange membrane 1 into the anode chamber 2 and the cathode chamber 3. Water or perferably pure water is supplied to the anode chamber 2 through a thin tube 7, and electrolyzed. As a result, oxygen and/or ozone are generated in the anode chamber 2, and hydrogen is generated in the cathode chamber 3. In the elecrtolysis method, the water passing through the membrane 1 from the anode chamber 2 to the cathode chamber 3 is returned to the anode chamber 2 thorough the holes 5 and 5' bored at the bottom of the cell 4 and a conduit 6 connected to the holes, and electrolysis is continued. As a result, the catholyte need not be discharged, the supply of pure water is reduced, and water can be efficiently electrolyzed. |
