Technique for the industrial utilisation of the skin of elasmobranchs (sharks, rays and the like), based on treatment of the skins with a hot acid solution. The steps followed are: - washing in running water - bathing in a hot solution comprising: - distilled water 41.66 litres - acetic acid 73.33 litres - sodium chloride 25 kg - bactericide 0.5 litres At this time the epidermis and the scales which cover the skin are removed with the help of a blunt surface. The rest of the solution is removed with a flow of cold water, after which the skins are ready for pickling and tanning by conventional methods. This technique makes it possible to process dogfish skins normally in a tannery after they have been subjected to this prior treatment. The acetic acid may be replaced by other acids such as formic acid, lactic acid or hydrochloric acid, among others.
