In a horizontal continuous casting system, the billet is intermittently drawn out of the mould, a preset distance at a preset speed, and halted to allow stable growth of the newly formed shell. During this time the pinch rolls are controlled to push back the billet to balance contraction. An extraction length measuring unit measures the push back distance, which is compared with the set value and a number of unusual values. Depending upon the result of the comparison the push back pressure or the extraction speed for the next cycle is corrected to compensate.
