Leather treatment agents contg. (a) an alkanolamide of formula (I), in which R = 9-23C alkyl or 9-23C alkenyl gp., R1 = H, gp. of formula (i); z = 2 or 3, X = H or alkali metal and Y = H, alkali metal, NH4, mono-, di- or trialkyl- or alkanolammonium; (b) a synthetic aromatic tanning agent or non-condensed precursor of this or an alkali metal- or ammonium salt of these, and opt. (c) a water-soluble Cr, Al, Fe or Zr salt or mixt. of these and (d) a conditioning agent. USE/ADVANTAGE - The tanning agents give leathers which after dubbing with commercial dubbing agents such as sulphonated fish oil, sperm oil or neat's foot oil and drying give bright, brilliant leathers with good light fastness, a firm, compact, even grain and a soft handle.
