The invention is based on an overvoltage protection of a consumer (terminal), the overvoltage protection being provided between a fused mains, especially a sub-distribution of a mains, and the consumer (terminal), which consumer may also be fused, and the overvoltage protection having a thermal release (14) protecting against excessive heating of an overvoltage arrester. In order to protect this overvoltage protection both against excessively high current loading and against excessively high heating of the overvoltage arrester, provision is made for a fuse (13) to be located in a longitudinal path (7) in which the current flows from the mains or sub-distribution, respectively, to the consumer or terminal, respectively, and for this fuse (13) to trip when the maximum current-carrying capacity of the longitudinal path (7) and/or of the branch path (12) is exceeded, and also for the overvoltage arrester (15) and a thermal release (14) which responds to heating of the overvoltage arrester and switches off the overvoltage arrester to be provided in the branch path (12) between the longitudinal path (7) and a further longitudinal path or earth (6). <IMAGE>
