DOUBLE EXPANDED METAL DISTILLATION TRAY

A liquid-gas contact device comprises a tray formed of a lower sheet 2 of a relatively small mesh expanded metal and an upper sheet 4 of a relatively large mesh expanded metal. The lower sheet 2 has slits 6 formed therein each with its own tongue 8. In use the gas passes upwardly through the slits 6 and the tongues 8 give the gas a component of velocity in the forward direction of liquid flow its inlet 12 to its outlet 10. The upper sheet 4 of expanded metal has strands 14 which act as weirs that serve to limit the net forward velocity of the liquid towards the outlet 10.
