In a process for producing carbon-containing catalysts having adsorptive properties, residues from the processing of mineral oil and bituminous coal are processed to pulverulent to fine-grained material and as a mixture are intimately mixed with a binder such as pitch and the like and after processing to green moulded blanks are heated to 450 to 1000@C.
