PURPOSE:To form the fusion spliced part of hermetically coated optical fibers having high mechanical strength by removing the inorg. material coatings on optical fiber glass, aligning the axes thereof, and subjecting the fibers to fusion splicing, then applying the inorg. material coating freshly to the part from which the inorg. material coatings are removed. CONSTITUTION:The org. material coatings 12 in the terminal parts of the hermetically coated optical fiber 1 are removed to expose the inorg. material coatings 13 and the end faces of the optical fiber glasses are disposed to face each other. The coatings in the end parts of the exposed inorg. material coatings 13 are removed by utilizing weak arc discharge, etc., to expose the optical fiber glass 11. The end faces of the optical fiber glass 11 are disposed to face each other and the axes are aligned by a side face observation method, etc. The end faces are then fusion-spliced by powerful arc discharge heating. The inorg. material coating 15 is freshly applied to the part of the fusion spliced part 14 where the inorg. material coating is absent. The strength of the fusion spliced part of the hermetically coated optical fibers is maintained in this way and the connection loss is decreased. |
